French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the inconsistent messaging from US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran. Speaking to journalists during a state visit to South Korea, Macron emphasized the importance of a serious and stable approach to matters of war and peace, contrasting it with Trump's often contradictory comments.
This is not a show. We are talking about war and peace and the lives of men and women, Macron remarked, highlighting the gravity of the situation. He suggested that leaders should refrain from making daily declarations that contradict previous statements, urging a more composed approach to diplomacy.
Macron's comments come as the US-Israel conflict in Iran continues into its second month, with various European nations, including France, providing some support to U.S. operations while avoiding direct involvement. He expressed concern about the mixed messages coming from the Trump administration, which has swung between suggesting imminent ceasefires and claiming victories in military operations.
Moreover, Macron stated that he believes excessive public commentary only muddles the situation. He indicated that the trust necessary for international alliances such as NATO diminishes when leaders cast doubt on their commitments. There is too much chatter, it's all over the place, he said, advocating for a more unified and thoughtful response to global challenges.
Turning his attention to Trump's criticisms of France regarding its role in the Iran conflict, Macron noted that he would not comment on operations that the U.S. and Israel have directed independently, stating they were not France's operations.
In light of Trump's recent derogatory remarks regarding Macron's marriage, which emphasized personal attacks and received backlash in France, the president chose to dismiss such comments as neither elegant nor up to standard, reinforcing his commitment to focusing on the broader issues at hand rather than engaging in personal disputes.
