Russian forces have entered and surrounded the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostyantynivka, turning it into a contested grey zone where neither side holds complete control. The city is a vital gateway to the rest of the Donbas; its loss would allow Russian troops to press toward Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, and potentially seize the entire region.
Ukrainian commanders claim the fighting is under control and that the enemy has failed to secure the city, yet they admit roughly 130 Russian soldiers are still inside the limits. Satellite footage and Russian defence videos confirm that troops are positioned on the northern outskirts and in damaged buildings, bolstering their defensive stance.
Drones play a decisive role. Ukrainian pilots, though limited in number, aim to destroy Russian logistics and aircraft, but the Russians have recently shifted to cheap Chinese drones that can operate within close proximity, enabling them to monitor Ukrainian launch sites without heavy cost.
The supply lines to the east have suffered heavily; Ukraine’s strikes on fuel refineries in Moscow, St Petersburg and Crimea have worsened shortages and disrupted Moscow’s logistics. At the same time, Russian troops have reportedly captured villages west of Kostyantynivka to reinforce their encirclement.
Local soldiers and drone crews are stretched thin. Many report that reinforcements are scarce and that they must continually retreat or risk being overwhelmed, with commanders reluctant to admit losses outside official statements.
If Kostyantynivka falls, delivering aid by land will become nearly impossible, and Ukrainian operations in Kramatorsk could become extremely hazardous, according to monitoring groups such as DeepState.
The ongoing battle for Kostyantynivka demonstrates a shift in tactics: the Russians are using flank maneuvers, building encirclements, and leveraging proximity for low‑cost surveillance to gradually erode Ukrainian defenses. At present, the division between Ukrainian claims of control and Russian assertions of rapid progress remains blurred, signalling a high‑stakes standoff with potential for broader escalation.
