MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal officers shot another person in Minneapolis amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, Gov. Tim Walz said Saturday. Walz, a Democrat, expressed his concerns via a social media post where he mentioned he had been in contact with the White House following the incident. He called on President Donald Trump to halt operations in the state, stating, “Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin released a statement indicating that the individual shot was armed with a firearm and two magazines, describing the situation as “evolving.”
Eyewitnesses to the shooting reported a chaotic scene, with bystanders hurling insults at the federal officers, calling them “cowards,” while one officer reportedly mocked the crowd. The atmosphere became tense as agents physically restrained a demonstrator, intensifying feelings of unrest among locals.
This shooting adds to the backdrop of widespread protests in the Twin Cities, which have been ongoing since the tragic shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer back on January 7. Good was killed when the officer discharged their weapon into her vehicle, prompting public outcry and distrust of federal personnel.
Just a day before this incident, thousands gathered on Minneapolis streets braving the cold to protest the federal immigration crackdown, demanding the removal of federal law enforcement from their communities.
