Uganda Recognises Eve of Ebola Free Status After Last Patient Discharged
The last person treated for Ebola in Uganda has left the national treatment centre, ending the country’s current outbreak and allowing officials to begin a 42‑day observation period that will confirm Uganda as Ebola‑free.
During a small ceremony, Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi described the moment as "a moment of joy" and said the country’s public health response had successfully curbed the spread of the virus.
The outbreak began in May when a man who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo—linked to the virus’s epicentre—was confirmed infected with the Bundibugyo strain. Uganda’s early screening and isolation protocols quickly contained the spread.
In light of ongoing cases in the DRC, the United States has imposed travel restrictions on citizens returning from the region, requiring a 21‑day quarantine in a third country before re‑entry. This has implications for international medical teams working in the area.
After the last patient’s discharge, Ugandan officials will monitor for any new infections over the next 42 days before officially declaring the nation Ebola‑free. No new cases have been reported so far.
Baryomunsi emphasized that early detection, prompt treatment and a robust health system are the pillars that defeated the disease, and the ministry urged the public to stay alert. "If symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding appear, seek immediate medical care," he said in a statement on X.
Uganda recorded 20 confirmed Ebola cases during the outbreak, mostly among visitors from the DRC, and two deaths. The country’s experience with previous outbreaks has prepared it with protocols that include isolation of suspected cases, comprehensive contact tracing, and targeted public health messages.
As the nation moves into its observation phase, the experience underscores the importance of vigilant public health measures and rapid response in mitigating the impact of emerging infectious diseases.
