Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky states that the US seeks to bring the war with Russia to an end by June, indicating that both sides have been invited to Miami for talks next week. “America proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams – Ukraine and Russia – meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week. We confirmed our participation,” Zelensky revealed.
While there has been no immediate response from the US or Russia, US President Donald Trump has been advocating for an end to the conflict since returning to office. The discussions occur amidst ongoing Russian assaults on Ukraine’s energy systems, plunging many areas into blackouts during freezing temperatures.
In the recent round of US-brokered talks in Abu Dhabi, Zelensky noted that challenging issues, including territorial concessions, remain unresolved. The possibility of a trilateral meeting involving leaders was discussed but he emphasized the need for preparatory elements before such a meeting can occur. As the Ukrainian leader explained: “The Americans say that they want to do everything by June,” suggesting that domestic political considerations in the US might influence this timeline.
Moreover, relentless Russian strikes have led to increased energy shortages throughout Ukraine, with significant damage to power facilities reported. This has left numerous residents, like Oksana Kykhtenko from Kyiv, living in dire conditions with no heating or electricity. As attacks continue, both sides are preparing for further discussions amid the backdrop of continuing hostilities.
