Sonam Wangchuk, a respected engineer and climate activist from Ladakh, has been on an indefinite hunger strike since 29 June to demand accountability in India’s education system.
After 16 days he has lost 8.2 kg (18 lb); doctors report his blood pressure has dropped to 107/70 and blood sugar levels at 67. Within his support base, many are concerned that the fast threatens his life.
Supporters, including students, MPs, and social‑media influencers, have gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, yet the government has not engaged. The protest, led by the satirical Cockroach Janta Party, calls for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the cancellation of a key medical entrance exam.
Wangchuk says he follows Gandhi’s non‑violent principles and will only end the fast when reforms are enacted.
Despite the health risk, thousands have urged him to quit. The movement plans to march to Parliament on 20 July if no dialogue occurs.
