US‑Iran Talks Postponed as Vice‑President Vance Cancels Switzerland Visit
Vice‑President JD Vance cancelled his planned trip to Switzerland, stalling a new round of talks between Washington and Tehran that were to start technical discussions on the terms of a fresh agreement.
The decision comes just a day after the United States lifted its naval blockade of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, following a deal signed earlier this week that outlined 14 key points: reopening the strait, a commitment by Iran never to pursue nuclear weapons, a $300 billion reconstruction plan, and the removal of all sanctions.
The Supreme Leader of Iran, Sheikh Mujtaba Khamenei, hailed the accord but said that the U.S. had used “desperation” to secure it. He also stated that future in‑person negotiations would not mean accepting the military stance of the ‘enemy’ side.
Meanwhile, Lebanon has remained a flashpoint, with Israeli air strikes aimed at Hezbollah‑backed positions. Lebanese officials reported that Israeli forces struck the south, killing at least 18 people in a single night. The Israeli Defence Forces said they targeted infrastructure and individuals linked to Hezbollah.
Swiss officials confirmed that the talks at Burgenstock mountain resort have been postponed, but they are still preparing for potential future meetings. Analysts say that the delay will likely affect the implementation timeline of the 60‑day deadline set in the recently signed agreement.
