In a surprising move, tech billionaire Elon Musk has pledged to give away $1 million daily to a randomly selected voter in Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state in the upcoming US presidential election. The initiative, which runs until November, is part of Musk's campaign group, AmericaPAC, that supports Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Those eligible for the giveaway must sign a pro-constitution petition designed to engage potential Trump supporters during the final weeks leading up to the election on November 5. The giveaway's first recipient was announced during a town hall event, illustrating Musk's aim at energizing Republican voters.
However, the legality of Musk's actions has come under fire. Election law expert Rick Hasen raised significant concerns on his blog, suggesting that the program may violate federal laws against compensating individuals for voting or for registering to vote. Hasen noted that the language used in Musk's petition could be problematic, particularly as it targets registered voters in swing states, potentially contravening established voting laws.
The petition requires signatories to provide personal contact information, raising further concerns about voter targeting. Musk's previous tactic involved offering $47 to individuals who could secure a signature from registered voters in swing states, a move that also drew scrutiny but might not have directly implicated voter bribery.
The legality of paying individuals to vote is a longstanding debate in the US electoral system, leading to creative approaches by different organizations. In response to Musk's initiative, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed grave concerns and suggested that law enforcement authorities should investigate the matter further.
AmericaPAC, which Musk established in July, has reportedly received $75 million in funding from the billionaire and aims to harness grassroots support for Trump’s campaign. The organization emphasizes values like free speech and gun rights as part of its platform with the president's election strategy heavily leaning on such groups to rally voters.
Musk himself highlighted his desire to gather over a million voter signatures in battleground states to amplify support for Second Amendment rights and advocate for the principles of constitutional governance. As the race for the presidency continues to tighten, Musk's involvement and the implications of his financial giveaways serve as a notable chapter in the ongoing political dialogue.
